  • The majority voted against a motion introduced by Greens Senators [Sarah Hanson-Young](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/senate/sa/sarah_hanson-young) and [Larissa Waters](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/senate/queensland/larissa_waters), which means it failed.

  • > *That the Senate—*
  • > *(a) notes that:*
  • >> *(i) the South Australian Marshall Government has, this week, been debating the impacts of mining in South Australia,*
  • >> *(ii) farming communities are opposed to progress of the Mining Act, citing inadequate consultation and seeking the right to protect their land, and*
  • >> *(iii) the Landholders' Right to Refuse (Gas and Coal) Bill 2015 is currently on the Senate Notice Paper; and*
  • > *(b) calls on the South Australian Government to support farmers and landholders' right to refuse unconventional gas and underground coal gasification.*

  • <p>The regulation of onshore mining activities is a state responsibility. The government recognises the importance of farmers' rights over their land but also the value and economic importance of secure rights to exploration and development. The government encourages states to balance all of these factors when legislating these matters.</p>
  • <p class="speaker">Sue Lines</p>
  • <p>The question is that general business notice of motion No. 1271, standing in the names of Senators Hanson-Young and Waters be agreed to.</p>
