Migration Amendment (Regulation of Migration Agents) Bill 2019 and another - Second Reading - Agree with bills' main idea
Passed by a modest majority
No rebellions 57% attendance
Division last edited 6th Mar 2020 by mackay staff
The majority voted against an amendment to the usual second reading motion, which means it failed. The usual second reading motion is "that the bill be read for a second time", which is parliamentary jargon for agreeing with the main idea of the bill. The amendment was introduced by Scullin MP Andrew Giles (Labor).
That all words after "That" be omitted with a view to substituting the following words:
"whilst not declining to give the bill a second reading, the House notes that:
(1) the recommendations that informed this bill were made in the 2014 Independent Review of the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority;
(2) the Government first introduced these measures in 2017, but let them lapse at the end of the 45th Parliament; and
(3) for over half a decade, the Government has failed to properly manage the laws relating to migration agents in Australia, to the detriment of the industry and those that rely on it".
Nobody rebelled against their party.
