What was the bill's main idea?
The bill aims to introduce a new revalidation check framework for visas, though at the beginning it will only apply to the newly created ten year visitor visa. It will also:
- clarify when a visa ‘ceases to be in effect’ under the Migration Act; and
- allow for the use of contactless SmartGate technology during immigration clearance.

A requirement that a visa-holder’s eligibility be reassessed during the course of the visa period appears to be relatively uncommon—for example, it does not appear to be currently used by any of the countries which have implemented ten-year visas for Chinese nationals. However, the United States is in the process of introducing the Electronic Visa Update System (EVUS), maintained by US Customs and Border Protection within the Department of Homeland Security.
