Summary

Edit

The majority voted against an amendment to the usual second reading motion (which is "that the bill be read a second time" - parliamentary jargon for agreeing with the main idea of the bill). This means the amendment failed and the original second reading motion will remain unchanged.

Amendment text

At the end of the motion, add ", but the Senate calls on the Government to:

(a) increase the single maximum base payment of the following social security payments to $88 a day:

(i) JobSeeker Payment,

(ii) Parenting Payment,

(iii) Age Pension,

(iv) Carer Payment,

(v) Disability Support Pension,

(vi) Farm Household Allowance,

(vii) ABSTUDY,

(viii) Austudy,

(ix) Youth Allowance, and

(x) Crisis Payment; and

(b) abolish all mutual obligation requirements".
