Bills — Data Availability and Transparency Bill 2022, Data Availability and Transparency (Consequential Amendments) Bill 2022; Third Reading
- Data Availability and Transparency Bill 2022 and another - Third Reading - Pass the bills
Description

Slade Brockman

The question now is that the remaining stages of the bills be agreed to and the bills be now passed.

-
- The majority voted in favour of agreeing with the main idea of the bills - known as reading them [for a third time](https://peo.gov.au/understand-our-parliament/how-parliament-works/bills-and-laws/making-a-law-in-the-australian-parliament/) - which means they are now passed in the Senate. Because they have already passed the House of Representatives, they will now become law.
- ### What do the bills do?
- According the [bills digest](https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Bills_Legislation/bd/bd2122a/22bd018):
- > *The purpose of the Data Availability and Transparency Bill 2020 (the Bill) is to establish a new data sharing scheme (‘the scheme’) which will serve as a pathway and regulatory framework for sharing public sector data. The Bill also establishes a new independent regulator, the National Data Commissioner, to oversee this process, and an Advisory Committee to assist the Commissioner. The purpose of the Data Availability and Transparency (Consequential Amendments) Bill 2020 (the consequential Bill) is to make amendments to other existing Acts. These amendments are necessitated by provisions in the Bill.*
