Motion text

That the Senate—

(a) notes that:

(i) the Brereton report alleges there were 39 murders and two instances of 'cruel treatment' carried out by 25 Australian perpetrators, either as principals or accessories, some of them on a single occasion and a few on multiple occasions,

(ii) some of the alleged victims were adolescents, and

(iii) at least 41 families have likely been impacted by the unlawful actions of Australian special forces soldiers deployed in Afghanistan; and

(b) calls on the Government to:

(i) unreservedly apologise to the families of the victims of Australian war crimes, and

(ii) support the creation of a compensation scheme.
