- Higher Education Support Legislation Amendment (Student Loan Sustainability) Bill 2018 - Third Reading - Agree with amended bill
Description

David Leyonhjelm

I have been informed that neither the government nor Labor will support my amendment, so I withdraw it.

The CHAIR: The question is that the bill, as amended, be agreed to.

-
- The majority voted in favour of a [motion](https://www.openaustralia.org.au/senate/?gid=2018-08-13.167.1) to agree with the bill in its amended form. This means they can now decide on whether to read the bill for a [third time](https://www.peo.gov.au/learning/fact-sheets/making-a-law.html). Giving a bill a third reading is parliamentary jargon for passing a bill.
- ### What is the bill's main idea?
- The [bill](http://parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/search/display/display.w3p;query=Id:legislation/billhome/r6051) was introduced to, [among other things](https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Bills_Legislation/bd/bd1718a/18bd096):
- * set a lower minimum repayment threshold of $45,000 per year with a repayment rate of one per cent
- * introduce a combined lifetime HELP loan limit of $150,000 for students studying medicine, dentistry and veterinary science courses, or $104,440 for all other students that is indexed to the Consumer Price Index (CPI);
- * change the indexation factor for HELP repayment thresholds from Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) to the CPI.
