Bills — Fair Work Amendment (Protecting Take-Home Pay) Bill 2017; Third Reading
- Fair Work Amendment (Protecting Take-Home Pay) Bill 2017 - Third Reading - Pass the bill
Description
<p class="motion-notice motion-notice-notext">No motion text available</p>
- The majority voted to pass the bill in the Senate. In parliamentary jargon, they voted to read the bill [for a third time](http://www.peo.gov.au/learning/fact-sheets/making-a-law.html).
- The bill will now go to the House of Representatives, where our Members of Parliament (MPs) will decide whether or not they will also pass the bill so that it can become law.
- ### What does the bill do?
- The purpose of the [bill](http://parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/search/display/display.w3p;query=Id:legislation/billhome/s1060) is to make sure that [penalty rates](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_Australia#Penalty_rates) can't be reduced if it means that there will be a reduction in the take-home pay of an employee.
- This bill is a response to a [Fair Work Commission ruling](http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-02-23/weekend-penalty-rates-fair-work-commission-decision/8295758) that "*Sunday and public holiday penalty rates will be reduced for full-time and part-time workers in the hospitality, retail and fast-food industries*".
