Description
The majority voted in favour of a motion introduced by Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert (WA), which means it was successful.
- The majority voted in favour of a [motion](http://www.openaustralia.org.au/senate/?id=2017-02-13.166.2) introduced by Australian Greens Senator [Rachel Siewert](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/senate/wa/rachel_siewert) (WA), which means it was successful.
- Motions like these don't have legal force by themselves. That is, they don't force the Government to act in a particular way. However, they do show the opinion of the Senate on this matter and so can be influential in terms of policy development and perhaps even the drafting of new bills to address this issue.

I seek leave to make a short statement.

Gavin Marshall

Leave is granted for one minute.

James McGrath

The government is committed to reducing Indigenous offending and incarceration by tackling the underlying disadvantage that increases the likelihood of a person coming into contact with the criminal justice system. The key to this is increasing educational training and employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians while reducing the misuse of alcohol and other drugs.

The government do not support this motion, as we do not support a Commonwealth justice target that will do nothing to address the issue. States and territories are responsible for their criminal justice systems. That is why we are working with state and territory governments to introduce justice targets—because they have the levers to effect change.

Gavin Marshall

The question is that motion No. 208 as moved by Senator Siewert in relation to the incarceration of Indigenous people be agreed to.
