- This is a '[closure of debate](http://www.aph.gov.au/About_Parliament/Senate/Powers_practice_n_procedures/aso/so199)' motion, which means it ends debate on a particular question so that the Senate can vote immediately on it. Basically, this motion is to speed things along.

<p>Pursuant to contingent motion standing in my name, I move:</p><p class="italic">That so much of standing orders be suspended as would prevent me moving a motion to provide for the consideration of a matter, namely a motion to give precedence to a motion to exempt this bill from the bills cut-off order.</p><p>I further move:</p><p class="italic">That that question be now put without amendment or debate.</p> <p class="speaker">Stephen Parry</p><p>The question is that the motion be now put.</p><p class="italic"> <i>A division having been called and the bells being rung—</i></p> <p class="speaker">Penny Wong</p><p>Mr President, a point of order: this is different business.</p> <p class="speaker">Stephen Parry</p><p>It is still valid if there has not been any intervening debate, so the bells will remain ringing for one minute.</p> <p class="speaker">Penny Wong</p><p>Mr President, you are not allowing any debate, because the government has moved a gag, but it is different business. The bells will be rung for one minute. I indicated that earlier. The bells are ringing for one minute.</p><p>The question now is that the suspension motion moved by Senator Brandis be agreed to.</p>
