  • <p class="italic">That the Senate&#8212;</p>
  • The majority support Greens Senator [Scott Ludlam](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/senate/wa/scott_ludlam)'s [motion](http://www.openaustralia.org.au/senate/?id=2014-11-24.123.2) against the Government's budget cuts to the ABC and SBS.
  • ### Background to the bill
  • Before the [2013 federal election](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_federal_election,_2013), Liberal MP [Tony Abbott](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/representatives/warringah/tony_abbott) had promised that there would be "no cuts to the ABC or SBS" (see the [interview with SBS](http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2013/09/06/no-cuts-abc-or-sbs-abbott) and ABC's FactCheck analysis for the [ABC promise](http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-07-27/no-cuts-to-abc-promise-check/5389220) and the [SBS promise](http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-07-27/no-cuts-to-the-sbs-promise-check/5391126)).

  • > *That the Senate—*
  • > *(a) notes that:*
  • > *(i) polling consistently shows That the [Australian Broadcasting Corporation](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Broadcasting_Corporation) (ABC) and the [Special Broadcasting Service](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Broadcasting_Service) (SBS) are the most trusted media outlets in Australia and two of the most trusted organisations of any nature,*
  • > *(ii) the then Leader of the Opposition, [Mr Abbott](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/representatives/warringah/tony_abbott), [stated categorically](http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2013/09/06/no-cuts-abc-or-sbs-abbott) before the [2013 federal election](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_federal_election,_2013) that there would be 'no cuts to the ABC or SBS', and*
  • > *(iii) on 1 September 2014, the [Minister for Communications](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/representatives/wentworth/malcolm_turnbull) refused an order of the Senate to lay on the table a copy of Mr Peter Lewis' efficiency review into the ABC and SBS [read more on [ABC News](http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-11-25/turnbull-suggests-abc-had-political-bargain-with-labor/5914988)]; and*
  • > *(b) condemns the Abbott Government's:*
  • > *(i) unjustified budget cuts to the ABC and SBS, and*
