Summary
EditThe majority agreed that the motion to disallow the Corporations Amendment (Streamlining Future of Financial Advice) Regulations 2014 should take precedence over question time and motions to take answers.
This was an amendment moved by Liberal Senator Ian Macdonald "to test how genuine the Labor Party and the Greens are on the particular urgency of this motion". It amends a precedence motion moved by Labor Senator Claire Moore, which called for the motion to disallow to be considered without significant delay.
A rebellious senator
Palmer United Party (PUP) Senator Jacqui Lambie crossed the floor and voted 'aye' in this division. This rebellion happened on the same day that she was removed as deputy Senate leader and deputy whip of PUP for not attending three party meetings this week (see ABC News).
Background to the motion
Labor Senator Sam Dastyari introduced the motion to disallow the Regulation and gave a good explanation of his reasons for doing so. ABC News also gave a useful summary of the background of this motion, particularly under the subheading 'Coalition of common sense'.
