Summary

Edit

The majority voted in favour of a motion to refer matters of road safety - including the social cost of road death, standards on imported vehicles and new safety technology - to the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee for inquiry and report by 9 September 2015.

The motion was introduced by Labor Party Senator for WA Sue Lines on behalf of her colleague in the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee, Labor Party Senator for WA Glenn Sterle, and passed with support of the majority of the crossbench.

Although the motion passed, the government opposed the motion. Liberal Party Senator for Victoria Mitch Fifield argued that it would duplicate work being carried out by a review of the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989, a mid-term update of the National Road Safety Strategy and an upcoming review of the full impacts of road trauma.
