The majority voted against an [http://www.openaustralia.org/senate/?gid=2007-08-08.16.1 amendment] introduced by Labor Senator [http://publicwhip-test.openaustraliafoundation.org.au/mp.php?mpn=Chris_Evans&mpc=Senate&house=senate Chris Evans], which means that it was unsuccessful. His amendment would have added to the original motion "that the bills be read a second time" in relation to the Social Security and Other Legislation Amendment (Welfare Payment Reform) Bill 2007, the Northern Territory National Emergency Response Bill 2007 and the Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs and Other Legislation Amendment (Northern Territory National Emergency Response and Other Measures) Bill 2007.
This amendment reflects a previous Labor amendment introduced in the House of Representatives.[1]

This legislation was introduced in response to the Report of the Northern Territory Board of Inquiry into the Protection of Aboriginal Children from Sexual Abuse, known as the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Children_are_Sacred Little Children are Sacred] report, which was publicly released on 15 June 2007.[2] That report came after concerns were raised on ABC's Lateline program in 2006.[3]
