Summary

Edit

The majority voted against an amendment to the usual second reading motion, which is "that the bill be read a second time" (parliamentary jargon for agreeing with the main idea of the bill). This means that the wording of the usual motion will remain unchanged. The amendment had been moved by Ryan MP Elizabeth Watson-Brown (Greens).

Amendment text

That all words after “That” be omitted with a view to substituting the following words:

“whilst not declining to give the bill a second reading, the House is of the opinion that the Government should raise the Commonwealth contribution to public schools to at least 25% of the schooling resource standard, so as to ensure that all public schools in Australia are fully funded in 2025”.
