Description
- The majority voted in favour of a [motion](https://www.openaustralia.org.au/debate/?id=2020-09-03.193.1):
- > *That so much of the standing orders be suspended as would prevent the motion for the third reading being moved without delay.*
In other words, they voted to suspend the usual procedural rules - known as [standing orders](https://peo.gov.au/understand-our-parliament/how-parliament-works/parliament-at-work/standing-orders/ - so that they could vote on whether to pass the bill - that is, give it a [third reading](https://peo.gov.au/understand-our-parliament/how-parliament-works/bills-and-laws/making-a-law-in-the-australian-parliament/) - immediately.
