Description

Tony Smith

The question now is that the amendment moved by the honourable member for Grayndler be disagreed to.

- The majority voted in favour of disagreeing with the [amendment](https://www.openaustralia.org.au/debate/?id=2020-04-08.11.1) to the usual [second reading](https://peo.gov.au/understand-our-parliament/how-parliament-works/bills-and-laws/making-a-law-in-the-australian-parliament/) motion "*that the bill be read for a second time*" (which is parliamentary jargon for agreeing with the main idea of the bill). This mean that the amendment failed.
- This amendment was introduced by Grayndler MP [Anthony Albanese](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/representatives/grayndler/anthony_albanese) (Labor) and, if it had been successful, its text would have been added to the usual second reading motion as a note. In other words, it didn't seek to change the actual text of the bills. Instead, it sought to use the political influence of the House to call on the Government to make the changes set out below.
- MP Albanese explained the rationale behind his amendment in [his contribution](https://www.openaustralia.org.au/debate/?id=2020-04-08.11.1) to the debate.
- ### Amendment text
- > *That the following words be added after paragraph (2):*
- >
- > *"(3) notes that casual workers deserve to be treated with the same respect as every other worker who faces losing their job because of this pandemic; and*
- >
- > *(4) calls on the Government to provide the JobKeeper payment to the 1.1 million casual workers who have worked for their employer for less than a year".*
