• Treasury Laws Amendment (2019 Measures No. 3) Bill 2019 - Second Reading - Criticism

Description

 •
Llew O'Brien

 •
In accordance with standing order 133, I shall now proceed to put the question on the motion moved earlier today by the honourable member for Whitlam on which a division was called for and deferred in accordance with the standing order. No further debate is allowed.

 •
Tony Smith

 • The majority voted against an amendment to the usual second reading motion, which is that the bill be read for a [second time](https://www.peo.gov.au/understand-our-parliament/how-parliament-works/bills-and-laws/making-a-law-in-the-australian-parliament/) (paliamentary jargon for agreeing with the main idea of the bill).
 • ### Amendment text
 • > *That all words after "That" be omitted with a view to substituting the following words:*
 • >
 • > *"whilst not declining to give the bill a second reading, the House criticises the Government and the responsible Ministers for their mishandling of and delays to the reforms to professional standards for financial advisers, resulting in significant uncertainty for both members of the industry and consumers".*
 •
For the information of honourable members, this is a deferred division from earlier in the day. The original question was that this bill be now read a second time. To this, the honourable member for Whitlam moved as an amendment that all words after 'That' be omitted with a view to substituting other words. So the immediate question for the House is that the amendment moved by the member for Whitlam be agreed to.
