Title
Bills — Australian Research Council Amendment Bill 2019; Second Reading
- Australian Research Council Amendment Bill 2019 - Second Reading - Research cuts
Description

Tony Smith

In accordance with standing order 133, I shall now proceed to put the question on the motion moved earlier today by the honourable member for Moreton on which a division was called for and deferred in accordance with the standing order. No further debate is allowed. The question is that the motion moved by the member for Moreton be agreed to.

- The majority voted against an amendment to the usual [second reading motion](https://www.peo.gov.au/understand-our-parliament/how-parliament-works/bills-and-laws/making-a-law-in-the-australian-parliament/) *that the bill be read for a second time*, which is parliamentary jargon for agreeing with the main idea of the bill.
- ### Motion text
- > *That all words after "That" be omitted with a view to substituting the following words:*
- >
- > *"whilst not declining to give the bill a second reading, the House notes that the Government has cut research funding, interfered in independent, peer-reviewed grant processes and abandoned nation-building investment in education and research infrastructure"*
