Description
- The majority voted against a motion that would have amended the normal [second reading](https://www.peo.gov.au/learning/fact-sheets/making-a-law.html) motion, which is *that the bill be read for a second time*. Agreeing to read a bill for a second time is parliamentary jargon for agreeing with the main idea of the bill. After this vote, the House can discuss the bill in more detail.
- The amendment to the normal second reading motion was introduced by Labor MP [Joel Fitzgibbon](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/representatives/hunter/joel_fitzgibbon).

<p>The original question was that this bill be read a second time. To this the honourable member for Hunter has moved as an amendment that all words after 'That' be omitted with a view to substituting other words. The immediate question is that the amendment moved by the member for Hunter be agreed to.</p>
